Lithuania, Europe’s hot new travel destination

By Donatas Svetaka

The modern world sits comfortably with the cultural heritage of Lithuania, where traditions blend with beautiful natural surroundings.

The oldest state in the Eastern Baltic, Lithuania dates from the year 1009. During its long history, the country has gained a rich architectural heritage, form Baroque, Gothic, and Classicism to rustic wooden architecture that is common throughout the country. In ancient times, Lithuania was the world’s main amber trading center. In fact, the amber stone is the symbol of the country.

Lithuania has a diverse cultural life and colorful stage performances, traditional festivals and vibrant nightlife produce music from classical to folk and to modern. As well, Lithuanians are active in sports, producing world-famous basketball and discus throwing stars.

Lithuania’s resorts are renown for their mineral springs and the refreshing seaside beaches are popular in summer. National and regional parks will take your breath away, and green and shady forests cover a third of its land. Streams weave their way, a thousand blue lakes sparkle, and long white beaches are cleansed by the Baltic Sea. In shady groves you can see roe deer and the occasional wandering bison. Farmsteads sit side-by-side with nature.

Traveling through this beautiful country is both rewarding and easy. Walking and hiking trails, as well as cycling tracks are everywhere. And there are plenty of places to park and picnic. Recreational opportunities include fishing, swimming, horse-riding, hiking, and much more. Authentic cuisine, based on fresh country produce, mean great dining is common.

After gaining independence, life in Lithuania quickly improved. Cities have been revitalized and the country joined NATO and the European Union in 2004. Now the capital, Vilnius, is striving to become an economic, political and entertainment center.

Lithuania, in the geographical center of the Europe, welcomes guests from all over the world with exceptional hospitality. Start planning your holiday now.
