Neringa: A Charming Resort Town on the Baltic Sea

By Donatas Svetaka

If you are looking for amazing natural scenery, beaches, gentle evening sea breezes and romantic sunsets, then you should visit Neringa, one of the most beautiful Lithuanian resort towns on the Baltic Sea.

The town, included in the UNESCO World Heritage list, is located on the Curonian Spit. Attractions include a range of sand dunes with rare flora, the old seaside forest, white-sand beaches, distinctive local architecture and authentic cuisine, and cultural and sports events.

Neringa Spit Dunes
The dunes are the most impressive part of the spit. One of the most popular spots is the Dune of Parnidis with its solar clock-calendar on the top. From this dune, you can enjoy the surrounding views.

The Hill of Witches has an open-air exhibition of 71 oak sculptures, made by Lithuanian folk artists. The theme is the world of witches, demons, and the characters found in the Lithuanian fairy tales and Neringa legends.

The hill of Karvaiciai is famous as the place where one of the oldest settlements of the Spit existed before it was buried by wind-blown sand at the beginning of the 17th century.

The Hill of Urbas is an excellent place for traditional events. Here, summer night movie sessions are organized and Jonins (the feast of St. John the Baptist) is celebrated.

Explore the distinctive Neringa architecture and enjoy the local cuisine
The unique architecture of the town is worth seeing as well. Check out the Nida's Evangelical Lutheran Church, built in the graceful Gothic style, the Catholic Church, the array of fishermen's homes whith their beautiful exterior decorations, and the 19th-century villas.

Visitors enjoy the local cuisine. Taste smoked eel, bream, perch, and smelt in most cafés and restaurants or direct from the smoked fish mongers. You can also try crow meat. For some, fried, boiled or stewed, crows are really tasty. The custom to eat crow meat seems to have originated during the times when hunger was quite common for inhabitants of the Spit.

In Neringa, numerous cultural events take place every year: the international folklore festival, the international festival of the famous German writer Thomas Mann (who spent several summers here in the early 1930s), fisherman’s festivals, opera and symphonic music concerts, as well Christmas and New Year celebrations.

Villas and hotels in different places of the town offer various kinds of recreational facilities: pools, saunas, Turkish baths, sports halls, bicycle hire, conference halls and so on. They also organize exhibitions, presentations, cultural events, banquets, dance nights, parties and discotheques. be sure to pick up a concert program from visitor centres.

So, start planning your holiday in Neringa, and don’t forget to bring your friends, family or colleagues. Shared impressions of this unique culture along with team activities are lots of fun and help to create better group relationships.
